about

I wrote this while still living in Brooklyn and even recorded it with my producer there, Billy Bell. I'd like to find the recording and compare it to this one. It has elements of being an annoying synth-pop tune, but there are some interesting harmonic things going on here, and a few good lyric lines.

What happened was this: I developed a highly sophisticated, and in many ways highly original, sense of harmony when I was quite young through my studies of jazz and classical traditions. Now, when I decided to adopt a more 80s style pop language, I did simply elements of the harmonic style in that instead of using higher chord extensions/alterations (9ths, 11ths, 13ths, quartal harmony, etc.), I stuck primarily with triads, which is what rockers generally use. However, I retained some of the elements of a deep harmonic style by using odd chord substitutions, common-tone progressions and the like. Not that I was really thinking about it that way; I just notice it now when I look back.

lyrics

Every time I’m near you
Something feels so right
Like I’ve known you
For a million years
But even as we feel this love
With all are might
You let those feelings
Lose out to your fears

And so you talk about it
Try to find a way around it
Even thought it’s clear for all to see

Chorus:
That we were meant to be
I wanna sing about it
And there’s no doubt about it
When your near

Everytime you call my name
I hear a song
About a love
That never disappears
But you always
Find some reason
To prolong
Are you gonna wait
A million years?

And so you think about it
Try to find a name to call it
Even thought it’s clear for all to see

Chorus:
